Lack of the extracellular matrix (ECM) contact or improper ECM contact prevents the activation of pro-survival signals resulting in reduced anti-apoptotic pathways, thus activating anoikis from death receptors and mitochondria. Increased expression of extrinsic Fas receptors also activates the extrinsic pathway.
