Extensive polyamine catabolism is followed by the generation of hydrogen peroxide and cytotoxic aldehydes. NOS1 deprived of arginine undergoes uncoupling and switches to the production of superoxide anion. NMDA receptor function is modulated by polyamines via a special recognition site.
